NEWHL Teams and Games

Our Friday games are played for FUN and to develop our game skills. The games are refereed.

Team and Game Organization
for the 2010-2011 Season

We expect to have game players at a wide range of levels, from Recreation to D to C. We have found that it is more fun to create different teams for each Friday game rather than have set, unchanging teams for the season. One benefit of having new teams every Friday is that we can accommodate two distinct and different goals:

  • Support leveled teams and leveled games.  For example, certain Fridays NEWHL might have two C/D level teams and two D/Rec level teams. The C/D level teams will play against each other and against external C or C/D teams. The D/Rec level teams will play against each other and against external D/Rec level teams. Leveled teams allow for competitive games at different levels.
  • Support multi-level teams, each containing players at Rec, D, and C level. We are planning to have games of NEWHL multi-level teams play against each other regularly throughout the season. Multi-level teams allow newer players to learn from more experienced players, promote camaraderie, and can be more fun and less competitive than the leveled games.

Throughout the season, each player will play on leveled teams and on multi-leveled teams.

NEWHL’s team and game coordinator creates the teams for each Friday. Everyone signed up for Friday games is guaranteed to be placed on a team for a game that will be played at 9:30 or 10:40 AM. Typically you will know by Wednesday of a given week whether you will play at 9:30 or 10:40. The coordinator will try to handle requests for a particular game time and requests from players who commute together to play at the same time. Please note that the creation of teams is done by the coordinator at her discretion, with the main goal of satisfying the group as a whole.

Team Captain
Each team has a player-captain, whose responsibility is to lead the team and make decisions during the game. The captain is not a coach, but is an experienced hockey player and team leader.

Tournament Teams and March Ice Program
Sometime in the late part of the season, we create new teams with players who will play in our April Showers Tournament. Those new teams are leveled for the tournament. The coaches set up the teams based on their assessment of players’ levels.

In March and April, we ratchet up the level of competition, give the higher level players the chance to play together, and encourage everyone to achieve her personal best.

Goalkeepers and Women’s Teams
We are always looking for goalkeepers and for women's teams that can play daytime games. Please contact newhl@ospf.org if you are a goalie or women's team organizer who could play day games with NEWHL.
