Who’s that chick in the Mini Cooper? It’s NEWHL’s own spitfire on ice, Syd Fadner! There’s not much down time for this active woman between the ice, coaching her fencing team at BC or her job as a bookbinder. Syd also kayaks and rock climbs. No wonder she packs so much dynamite into her petite frame!
Syd graduated from University of Wisconsin with a degree in journalism. She worked for a time in a “dead boring” job as a shipper’s agent. She eventually attended the North Bennet Street School in Boston for two years where she studied the craft of bookbinding. Her passion for competitive fencing began 25 years ago after taking an adult ed class. In addition to the pride she takes coaching her collegiate team, Syd can also boast of her own 6th place finish last season on the national point standings in the USFA 50+ Women’s Foil.
Last summer, The Kid lived on a remote Lake Michigan island in a lighthouse as a tour guide of the beacon where her great-grandparents were once keepers. Adventurous Syd even once flew from Boston to Seattle in an open-cockpit bi-plane with her then-boyfriend.
Syd’s skating experience was limited to pond-skating as a kid in Wisconsin, but she was lured to NEWHL after reading the Boston Globe’s article featuring Liza Stern. This is her fourth year skating with the organization. She says of skating with NEWHL: “The people are great and I love the endorphin high I get after skating for a couple of hours.”
Whether she’s on blades or brandishing one, it’s hard to foil Syd!
