Laura never expected to be walking, much less back on the ice after doctors at Mass General recommended her leg be amputated in 2005. After breaking her femur snowboarding, doctors realized that her bone had been weakened by previous radiation treatments, slowing the healing process. Three months after a bone marrow transplant and stem cell therapy, Laura was back on her feet again and skating by the summer of 2007.
Laura pioneered Pingree School’s first girls’ hockey team, and went on to graduate from Gettysburg College with degrees in English and Art. Today, she’s a self-employed photographer specializing in weddings and portraits [www.laurakozlowski.com].
Don’t look for Laura on the ice for the next few months. She’s heading to Kansas to participate in a Cycle-Cross event. Then she’s off to Cornell to teach art next semester and will be skating with the “Sirens”, a team composed of grad students and alumni. Hopefully she’ll return in time for the April Showers tournament.
The most rewarding thing about skating with NEWHL? “The people!” Have fun during your hiatus, Laura!
