As an undergrad at Cornell, men’s hockey was big, but Arlene was astonished to learn that there was no outlet for women on the ice.  “They let us play ‘broomstick hockey’”—literally figure skates on the ice with broomsticks and a ball.  When Arlene’s youngest started hockey, Arlene decided she wanted to play real and signed up with The Hockey Academy’s co-ed league in Marlboro.  Tired of getting beat up on the ice, she moved to the South Shore Women’s League and came to NEWHL in 2006.

Off-ice, Arlene is married with three kids—a son, 28; and two daughters, 24 and 21.   She received her AB in Chemistry from Cornell and a PhD in Biochemistry from Harvard.  She has been doing research and teaching biochemistry and human genetics at Harvard, MIT, UMass Medical Center and is currently at Boston College.

The most rewarding thing about skating with NEWHL?  “The friendships—mutual support, affection and respect.”

And now Arlene only uses her broom for sweeping!
